Sunway Safaris are overland safaris so are going to spend time on the road exploring Southern Africa. You will find on each detailed itinerary a breakdown of the modes of transport used for each safari.
Sunway owns each vehicle from new and authorised Mercedes and Toyota Service Agents service them. While Sunway strive for trouble-free touring, this investment in their fleet ensures (should they need it) access to back-up and support in just about every town in Southern Africa.
Sunway Safaris Red Trucks
Sunway custom builds and tailors these vehicles to meet the needs of their small group safaris. An authorised passenger vehicle builder constructs them in accordance with the latest safety requirements.
Sunway has infused their years of experience into the truck design which ensures they are completely self-sufficient. Each truck isequipped with the following features:
- Huge windows with vertical sliding openings for unobstructed views
- Roof hatches for game viewing (where local park regulations allow us to use them)
- Seating for 12 passengers with seat belts designed to maximise space and provide ample legroom. The passenger cabin seamlessly integrates with the cab. This enables you to actively engage with your two Sunway Safaris guides and for them to share their knowledge throughout the trip.
- Drinks cooler box, kitchen locker with a freezer, gas stoves
- A luggage locker
- Awning for protection from bad weather
- 2 spare wheels and long range fuel tanks
- A water tank

Sprinter Buses
On selected departures, where road conditions allow, you may travel in a Mercedes Sprinter Bus with a luggage trailer for baggage and equipment.
Sunway Safaris have customised their Sprinters to meet their requirements. They have individual high back seats with lap belts and large sliding windows for each row. They have large off road tyres which give better ground clearance for gravel roads. The Sprinters have a comfortable cruising speed and are ideally suited to tours where Sunway use local open 4WDs for activities, or where the focus of the safari is walking or activity based. A safari by Sprinter means you have the convenience of comfortable long distance cruising combined with the advantage of local vehicles for activities.

4WD Open Safari Vechicles
In the National Parks of Botswana you will travel in Sunway’s open 4WD game viewing vehicles, accompanied by one of our expert Botswanan guides in addition to your main Sunway tour leader. These vehicles offer:
- unobstructed views from an open sided vehicle allow you to feel part of the bush and close to the wildlife
- excellent safety, each vehicle meets international safety standards with a built in safey shell, individual bucket seats and safety belts
- blankets for extra warmth on early morning game drives
Outside of Botswana’s parks, game drives by open 4WD will be conducted by local guides and vehicles will vary in design. This ensures you not only get to experience the bush and the wildlife up close but you also benefit from the immense knowledge of the local guide. Game viewing in open 4WD vehicles are clearly marked on the tour maps with a yellow line.

Mekoro
The mokoro is a traditional wooden canoe used for transportation in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It is propelled by standing at the stern and pushing through shallow waters with a pole.
Taditionally, mekoro are crafted by hollowing out the trunk of a straight tree like the Sausage tree, but modern versions are often made of fiberglass due to environmental concerns. Sunway has launched a project encouraging the use of fiberglass mekoro in the Ditsipie area of the delta.
Gliding through the delta in a mokoro with a local guide is the quintessential Okavango experience. It allows you to quietly explore the maze of waterways, observe wildlife, and appreciate the birdlife. Each mokoro accommodates two people, with a poler guide and space for your personal belongings. Additional mekoro transport camping equipment for wilderness trips lasting 3 days and 2 nights. This adventure provides a unique opportunity to learn about the traditions and lifestyle of the Okavango people. Feel free to ask your poler questions, as they possess valuable knowledge despite limited English proficiency.

Boats
Imagine sailing across a pristine ocean bay in a classic Mozambican dhow, accompanied by playful dolphins. Or peacefully approaching a group of elephants quenching their thirst in Botswana’s Chobe National Park. Exploring a destination by water often offers the most captivating experiences. It can be the only means of reaching certain locations. As Sunway has small group sizes, this allows exclusive access to boats, canoes, kayaks, and dhows whenever possible. This guarantees a more intimate and personalized adventure on the water.
