Sunway Safaris

100% African Safari Adventures since 1994

From one truck and one itinerary in 1994, with hard work and experience Sunway Safaris is now one of the leading small group adventure travel companies in Southern Africa.  Today they run more than 300 safaris a year on 21 routes in 10 countries.

Itineraries have been perfected over 23 years of touring in Africa.  They are proudly a 100% African company.  They live in Africa, travel in Africa and love sharing their passion for this amazing continent.

The Sunway Safaris brochure provides a detailed summary of the safaris offered, departure dates and the different ‘grades’ of safaris that are on offer.  If you do not already have a copy please contact us and we can post one to you.

Some Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to go on safari?
In Southern Africa wildlife viewing is at its best from May through to October (Autumn, Winter & Early Spring).  Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and much of the Eastern side of South Africa are dry over these months and are wet over Summer.  Cape Town, the Eastern Cape Province are the opposite and receive their rainfalls primarily in Winter.

Game viewing improves as it get dryer and the wildlife congregates close to the remaining water sources.

While we all want to have amazing wildlife sightings on safari it is also a good idea to take into account how cold/heat sensitive you are. In July/August  in Botswana and Namibia can get down to close on 0 degrees Celcius overnight and then becomes pleasantly warm in the 20’s during the day.  By October overnight temperatures are much more pleasant but daytime temperatures can soar, especially in Namibia.

You can download our guide When is it a good time to go for game viewing?  The guide covers the major National Parks and Reserves in Southern and Eastern Africa.

What is the age range on the safaris?
Most travellers are aged 28 – 65 + with the average age being around 45 years.  The minimum age allowed is 12 years and those over 65 need a simple doctors note saying that they are fit and healthy to participate in the safari they have chosen.

To understand the Physical Demands of travelling on a Sunway Safari read our Article “Is a Sunway Safari Right for You.“

What is limited participation?
Sunway’s popular Accommodated and Under Canvas Camping safaris both require limited participation from travellers in the group.  This means helping pack up in the morning, chopping the tomatoes for a salad or stirring a pot.  Dishes are done on a rotation basis and if you are on a camping safari you will put up and pack down your tent.

Sunway’s guides plan, shop for and prepare all the included meals on the safari.

If this does not sound like your ‘cup of tea’, the Classic Journeys are non-participation.  Your Sunway team and the staff of your accommodation will look after you with most most meals eaten at your accommodation.  You need to be prepared to carry your own bags from time to time as not every property will have porters.

What's it like to travel overland?
Travelling overland with Sunway Safaris is not to be confused with the backpacking “drink around Africa” overland tours that you may have heard about.

Travelling with Sunway Safaris is all about a journey with a small group of people who are wanting to have real and lasting contact with this amazing continent.

The African continent is mind-blowingly large, something that many people don’t truly appreciate till the set foot on its soil for the first time.  It is not surprising then that getting from A to B often requires some long days on the road.

Sunway as an African company truly understands the distances and the local road conditions so each safari itinerary is carefully planned so you spend a couple of days in most places.  Sometimes there are one night stops and these are often places that are a mid point two big safari highlights.

We recommend you read our blog post “How to know if you are cut out for an overland safari?”

Each of the detailed itineraries also includes the travel distances and approximate travel times to guide you.

What do I need to take on safari?
Clothing wise you need to take very little on safari and function is definitely more important than fashion and this applies even if you are staying on one of our lodge based safaris.

You might want to check our our blog post “Preparing for your first African Safari” for some helpful tips about what  is worth investing in.

How do I book my Sunway Safari?
Sunway Safaris need to be booked via your preferred travel agent/broker/African travel specialist.  They will be able to assist with matching your chosen safari with the best flights and they will also be able to provide you with a quotation for travel insurance that provides the appropriate level of cover for the journey you are undertaking.

You will need to pay your travel agent a 20% deposit to secure your booking and final payment is due a minimum of 6 weeks prior to your safari departing.
